The next stop on the Texas Ambulatory Surgery Center Society's road trip was Fannin Surgicare, an ambulatory surgery center located on the campus of The Woman's Hospital of Texas in Houston. Because of its location, women and children make up the bulk of its patients, with services including a large amount of upper/lower endoscopy, ENT, hearing restoration, urology, breast reconstruction, pediatric orthopedics, general surgery, and obstetrics-gynecology.

Opened in 2005, the facility is anticipating a refresh to the walls and carpet, as well as a transformation of the children's playroom up front, which will become a low anxiety room for a more private check-in process. Currently, when a patient checks in, they receive a card, and every person who assists the patient writes their name/department down on said card. When the appointment is over, the patient has a list of all the staff members involved in care that day. This is not only helpful for patients, but it also helps hold employees accountable.

For instance, the patient satisfaction that can come about and be made evident from this list of names is then reported back to the team and celebrated. And the Fannin Surgicare team is a tight-knit one. There are often decorations in the break room and company cookoffs, and it is clear that the center's administrator, Vidal Scuggs, is there to recognize and support staff.

Each year, Fannin Surgicare completes about 4,600 surgical procedures and regularly makes adjustments to better serve patients. For example, if someone comes in for infertility, this person's appointment won't be on the same day as pediatric cases. This came about after a patient who had been battling infertility mentioned on a survey that it was very emotional to come in and be surrounded by babies.

The care extends outside of the ASC, too, as Fannin Surgicare participates in several philanthropic causes like volunteering at the Houston Food Bank, donating medical equipment to Project C.U.R.E., and a clothing drive with Star of Hope.

Stay tuned for more updates on visits to Texas' surgery centers!
