After hosting a networking event for the ambulatory surgery center (ASC) industry, TASCS was able to tour three different ASCs in South Texas.

TASCS embarked on a remarkable summer road trip to Corpus Christi, Texas, joining fellow members of the South Texas ASC industry for a highly beneficial networking event. TASCS President Dallas Freyer, RN BSN, expressed her genuine delight, stating, "It was truly wonderful to unite with everyone at this long-awaited gathering."

Attendees were warmly welcomed by local ASC celebrity, Freyer, who is widely recognized as an expert and mentor in the local market. During the stay in Corpus Christi, TASCS had the privilege of visiting three exceptional ambulatory surgery centers. The first stop was Saratoga Surgical Center and a comprehensive tour by Janet Macias, the clinical coordinator. Saratoga opened its doors in 2017, as a multi-specialty center that includes dental, ENT, plastics, pain, optometry, and general surgery.

Beginning in the spacious waiting room, visitors were greeted by captivating local photography done by Merritt Kennedy, Dr. Paul Kennedy’s wife, which expertly showcased the coastal theme. Continuing throughout the facility, the walls were adorned with calming and complimentary colors of ocean teal.

The subsequent destination was Coastal Bend Ambulatory Surgical Center, home to TASCS Board Member and Center Administrator Sunshine Moore. This surgery center prides itself on offering laser, cataract, and eye surgery since 1986, and it is led by Texas Ophthalmological Association’s Immediate Past President, Jacob Moore, MD.

This boutique center boasts vintage charm with repurposed airport waiting room seats, a patient calming room with massage chairs, two procedure rooms with state-of-the-art ergonomic chairs the physicians appreciate, and intimate charm. Coastal Bend ASC is connected to Dr. Moore’s ophthalmology practice office, where patients can receive Lasik procedures, complete with a warm huggable dolphin. The family culture is evident, as the facility has long-standing employees with 23, 26, and 30 years of service!

The final tour was the newly constructed Texas Orthopedic Center of Excellence, a remarkable project spearheaded by TASCS President Freyer, which has been meticulously developed for over two years. Despite numerous setbacks caused by COVID-related supply chain issues, the team was exhilarated when they finally obtained the opportunity to move in and perform their inaugural case in June 2023.

The waiting room at the center is adorned with floor-to-ceiling windows, allowing an abundance of natural light to graciously flood the space. This thoughtful design element creates an instantly calming effect as patients step inside. Freyer further expounded that the preoperative and post-anesthesia care unit areas feature a well-designed square floor plan, enabling seamless navigation. The hallway boasts ample space to accommodate two beds concurrently without any inconvenience. The team eagerly anticipated the additional space, which has proven to be an invaluable asset.

While touring the operating rooms, TASCS observed the dedicated surgical teams diligently attending to a total knee case. Each OR door and the hallway itself are equipped with strategically placed windows, enabling easy observation of ongoing procedures and the precise whereabouts of team members.
