Membership Monday: AMSURG

Senior Division VP of Operations Trenton Mattison talks about AMSURG’s community-driven platform and new services the company is providing to the healthcare industry.

Trenton Mattison, the senior division vice president of operations at AMSURG, has been with the company for over 20 years. In his time there, he has engaged in collaborative relationships with physician partners to maintain their shared mission of enhancing the lives of patients and making sure there is access to their needs.

AMSURG, which is part of Envision Healthcare, gives back in a variety of ways, including designating days to provide free screenings to patients without insurance, Mattison said. The provider works to create more accessible and affordable care, as well as educate patients on specific health concerns. Community efforts lead to the care of over 115,000 patients annually across 20 ambulatory surgery centers in Texas.

“Ambulatory surgery centers are an integral part of the healthcare system, providing essential care that helps patients maintain their health and quality of life,” Mattison added. “When certain procedures are safely offered in the outpatient setting, patients can receive quality care in a comfortable and more convenient location that is often more financially accessible.”

Beyond caring for patients, AMSURG makes it a point to create an empowering culture for teammates, too. “At the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, many of our centers held regular forums to share lessons learned, problem solve and talk through new protocols,” Mattison said. “These gatherings and small thank you notes were ways for us to acknowledge our teams for all the incredible work they’re doing.”

As the pandemic evolved, AMSURG had to rely on strong communication to keep its team and patients up-to-date. As a result, the provider enhanced its quality measures and provided more educational opportunities to its patients. More efficient communication models, such as texting patients, have also been adopted.

Recently, AMSURG has started providing endoscopic ultrasound procedures in Abilene, Texas, in order to assess digestive diseases. Soon, some centers will add pain management injections, as well, to better support patient needs.

“Often, people don’t realize how ASCs support their communities, and understandably so, because America’s healthcare system is dated and very difficult to navigate,” Mattison stated. “As an ASC community, we must continue to educate Americans about the value we add to the healthcare system – high-quality care, greater convenience, better access, shorter stays, enhanced customer service and a positive patient experience, all while improving patient outcomes.”
