Cybersecurity in the Medical Field

Ambulatory surgery centers need to have solutions in place that help provide security and operational resilience.

As the medical industry continues to evolve, some things are constant, such as the human body’s need for qualified care and the use of technology to help accomplish this. The Texas Ambulatory Surgery Center Society had a thought-provoking and informative town hall with Medigate by Claroty, discussing the integration of the healthcare field and the world of cybersecurity.

Simeon Utubor, Medigate’s vice president of sales engineering, touched on the trend of seeing more technology in ASCs than ever before. This comes with its advantages, but it can also mean more opportunities for cyber risk and financial loss. Utubor went on to discuss Medigate’s comprehensive, cloud-based cybersecurity solution, tailored to each brand’s unique requirements.

Medigate understands the protocols for devices and learning management systems, can “passively listen” to see where specific systems might malfunction, and takes the guesswork out of it, so that ASCs can focus on patient care. Medigate then suggests what could help a company run as smoothly and effectively as possible, focusing on “where bits and bytes meet flesh and blood.”

Because it is not what patients go to ASCs to spend their money on, Utubor mentioned that, oftentimes, businesses will not spend as much on cybersecurity. He stressed how the inclusion of these types of programs can create a safe and efficient way to monitor devices and systems.

No matter what type of solution you turn to, cybersecurity is an important factor to consider, as it helps protect everything from systems, processes, networks, and programs to sensitive information and financials. This, in turn, helps keep a business running smoothly, which, for ASCs, means the continuation of delivering high-quality, cost-effective care.
